Worm infection: The government measures

Albendazole tablet, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), is used for the treatment of intestinal worms in children and adolescents as part of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) programmes globally. Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases (STH), also known as parasitic intestinal worm infection, is a significant public health concern mostly in low resource settings. These are known to have detrimental effects on children’s physical growth and well being and can cause anaemia and under-nutrition. Regular deworming as advised by the World Health Organization eliminates worm infestation among children and adolescents living in areas with high STH burden, thereby contributing to achieving better nutrition and health, says the union Ministry of Healthcare in a Press Release. Tears of garment industry: Not so colourful for another year

The sector sees no hope of revival for another one year, as the pandemic is feared to swallow two more festival seasons. Human beings will never stop wearing clothes. People will never stop buying garments. Still, the garment industry has lost its hopes. The industry, dominated largely by unorganized players and with a high level of micro sectors’ involvement as an outsourcing destination, feels the pain with the micro sector losing their base. The demonetization, GST implementation and now the worse lockdown kept them on a deathbed. The garment industry has been passing through a long-drawn bad phase. No industry, as important as the garment sector ever faced a crisis for as long a period as five years. This sector has been suffering for over five years, because of the three major ...

The Endless Troubles of MSMEs: Need a prudent framework to safeguard the interest

For MSMEs Covid-19 induced lockdown is just another crisis. India’s hostility with China has opened newer opportunities for SMEs engaged in the high technology and engineering segment. But it is not the opportunity that an average SME is worried about, but the inspector raj and delay in giving approvals. Every SME has this problem. Most SMEs are also afraid of local satraps’ pressure to meet their interests. Local authorities must handle them strictly and warn them of consequences. However, these satraps are hand-in-glove with law enforcers too.   It is important to debottleneck local issues, says an entrepreneur who has been engaged in manufacturing aluminium foils. Plenty of local hooliganism triggered by local politicians and NGOs kill the enthusiasm of entrepreneurs, who spend...

The payment crisis of MSMEs: Even PSUs flout payment rules

Payment crisis faced by micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) is still a big concern. A large number of companies whom we met in the one and a half years as part of our survey said that one of the major reasons for their crisis was the payment default by large companies. The defaulters include mini-Ratna public sector institutions. Even those mid-sized companies which procured orders from cash-rich public sector institutions face different kinds of concerns. Once their multi-crore order is ready for delivery, the principal company which placed the order has to come for an inspection. This inspection is delayed for several months, keeping on hold the entire work, on which the company has spent a huge sum. It hampers the money flow, increases the cost of capital and other consequent ...

Sonu Bhasi: Future India`s promising lawyer

Sonu Bhasi, the lone successful candidate of last year's Solicitor exam, is one of future India's top-class lawyers. Self-made, she does her homework well to align with her dream of being an upright lawyer. Hard work never fails and nothing is impossible, she proves unequivocally as she climbs each step with a smile. A girl from a non-lawyer class family choosing as royal a profession as a lawyer with great curiosity is an exception. Sonu Bhasi has none at home or in the neighborhood to guide through her chosen profession, as her parents had a totally different career background. With plenty of unsuccessful lawyers around, one who chooses this profession with great optimism also needs to stay well prepared for a challenge. When there is a perception that good lawyers are m...

Bad Loans: What went wrong?

Malfeasance Bankers’ performance after the initial loans were made was also not up to the mark. Unscrupulous promoters who inflated the cost of capital equipment through over-invoicing were rarely checked, said Raghuram Rajan, former RBI Governor in a statement before Parliamentary Estimates Committee on Banks' NPAs. An extract from the statement before Parliamentary Estimates Committee on Banks' NPAs. How important was malfeasance and corruption in the NPA problem? Undoubtedly, there was some, but it is hard to tell banker exuberance, incompetence, and corruption apart. Clearly, bankers were overconfident and probably did too little due diligence for some of these loans. Many did no independent analysis, and placed excessive reliance on SBI Caps and IDBI to do the necessary due...

Ring out the rift : Let nation be first

In a democracy, a creative opposition has an important place, but not for animosity. When the concept of “give and take respect” is consigned toflame, the establishment called democracy becomes foe-crazy. The end result is, economy suffers the worst, denizens become the victims of rift and every growth opportunity is aborted. It is sad to say that our judiciary is questioned, reaching to the extent of bringing impeachment motion against the former Chief justice of India once. Hail the democracy; no doubt, that was aborted later. But the gesture indicated a bad sign, a crazy mind and a foul brain. The signs of intolerance are seen everywhere. The Supreme Court is the custodian of justice for every Indian and its integrity is beyond anyone's misgiving. The honesty of armed forces and the...

Tears of employees: Crooks still rule the roost

Companies that are able to pay employees deserving benefits should be made to pay strictly. It is found, in our study, some companies with enough capacity refuse to pay even a rupee, set aside what they deserve, even in the case of those who superannuates after many years of service. Let not this ruthless action be a kind of ease of doing business. Mr. Babu had been working for 28 years with Mumbai based business group which is engaged in the media and entertainment business before superannuating in July last year. Over the years he was rolled through eight of the group companies, indeed for promoters' strategy of jumping the labor rules that most of the mid-sized company promoters habitually do. They want to avoid time-to-time liabilities on employees under the applicab...
